My Project
My students thrive on activities that require strategic thinking skills. They enjoy competing with each other but still need direct instruction on leadership skills, problem solving and character building. The goal of this project is to use class time and after-school club time to practice and compete in chess games. As the students progress in skill, they will mentor other students from the school.
Students will work in pairs to identify strategies to help persevere in difficult situations.
This resilience standard is repeated throughout grades three through six including HE.4.R.4.1, HE.4.R.1.4, HE.68.R.4.4 in both the areas of character and critical thinking and problem solving. Since students will also engage in teaching other students, resilience standards concerning leadership skills will also be promoted (HE.5.R.3.2 and HE.3.R.3.1).
To begin, students will use the Quick Chess sets to learn strategies competing with only a few pieces. These unique sets will help students learn the movement of the special pieces but will also facilitate strategic thinking in order to achieve checkmate in a game. As their skills progress, students will compete with each other in chess matches using the wooden chess sets. These sets are magnetic to assist in piece movement without losing the placement of all the pieces on the board.
Some students already have playing skills in chess so these students will be able to compete and lead others in matches. Since the Quick Chess games can be used with players at the same time as the wooden sets, many games can progress at the same time with only one or two teachers monitoring. This will allow games to continue in class and in the after-school chess club even though players are at different levels.
Decision making, mentorship, and perseverance skills will reviewed and promoted as students encourage and empower others.
