My Students

My students are motivated, creative and inquisitive, and benefit academically and socially from hands-on experiences. In our urban, Title I public school we have students at all academic levels, English Language Learners, gifted and talented students, and children with special needs, most from low-income homes. All of them however, are eager to learn and would love to enhance their literacy and STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) content knowledge by becoming real live writers, mathematicians, engineers, technologists and junior scientists.

As students reflect on photos of past projects funded by DonorsChoose.org, they cannot wait for the next project to begin!

Hands-on projects provide ways for all of our students to demonstrate achievement even if they struggle to do so in other subject areas. I am always impressed by how much they love small-team, challenging projects where they can showcase their achievements to the whole school community.

My Project

Essays, poetry, stories, research, info-graphics, coded greeting cards, art, brochures, you name it, my students have created it! They create so many different, gorgeous projects during the school year that demonstrate their understanding of concepts. But when students can only see their work on the digital screen, there is no actual evidence to take home or display.

Students are much more goal-oriented when their displayed work provides them with a sense of accomplishment.

Our students are never able to hold completed projects in their hands, share them with friends, or hang them on school bulletin boards or refrigerators at home. My students need a basic classroom color laser printer to be able to create, show and share. A color laser printer will provide students, families and our school with authentic evidence that students have mastered concepts and implemented their understanding in a tangible form.
