Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My scholars are sweet, thoughtful and hard-working children; who I am blessed to have taught in second grade and now again in 4th. The beginning of the pandemic, in 2020 occurred with the scholars I have this year-while I was teaching second grade.

Two years after 2020 I am lucky to have a second chance to finish the year with my former 2nd graders now in grade 4.

I am also delighted to say that I have three Spanish-speaking scholars who are refugees. They have joined our family and have been embraced by all the scholars in the room. Together we translate each lesson and work to promote each other‘s ideas, cultures and academic progress.

My Project

These materials will make a difference in my scholars learning by giving them access to culturally relevant texts, as well as hygiene materials. My population of scholars come from a variety of homes. The wipes and socks will be given to the scholars who presently live in temporary housing. They at times do not have access or ability to shower daily. The books will be used both at home and in school to build the children’s confidence and identity.

The scholars love to read books with characters and heroes they can identify with.

The bilingual books will be used for my three scholars who only speaks Spanish and are refugees. My scholars come from Ecuador, Venezuela, and El Salvador. Two of my students have not been in school for more than a year because of where they were located prior. The books will be use to continue connecting my scholars with texts in both languages.

The iPad cases will be given to the bilingual students who are using the iPad to translate with peer, Duolingo and overall work.
