Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a Title I middle school in which the majority of our students live in poverty. Many students are bilingual and come from immigrant families, so they are learning the skills required to be literate in a global society.

My students are curious about the world and passionate about technology.

This year, I am thrilled to combine traditional literacy instruction in English Language Arts with technology to prepare my students to be successful learners for the future. Unfortunately, my school does not have many opportunities to fund new technology initiatives. Any and all support is thoroughly appreciated!

My Project

This year, not only will students be introduced to Google Apps for Education and get their own school email addresses, they will also learn to code! Using a coding website, we will explore the basics of computer science and they will learn how to write lines of code that make actions happen on their screens. The platform uses videos to teach students how to write their own code and complete various activities.

A class set of headphones will help personalize my students' learning, allowing them to move through coding lessons at their own pace.

Students who need to practice certain skills will be able to watch instructional videos multiple times, and students who are ready can move on more quickly with their lessons. They will be able to select content and videos that will support their learning, and they will be able to remain focused in a room of up to 30 students! I am thrilled to learn alongside them as we explore how computer science can make us better 21st Century learners and thinkers.
