Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach English Language Arts in a high school in the Southeast Section of The Bronx. Seventy-four percent of our students qualify for free lunch, so our student body is high-poverty. Our school is a Title I school. We provide services for a variety of students, including students with special needs and English Language Learners.

I always work towards teaching works of literature that my students can connect to thematically and culturally.

For my AP Language class, I want my students to feel competent in reading works through rhetorical analysis. I want their intellectual confidence to be further enhanced, so they could ultimately feel prepared for a college classroom.

My students are energetic and appreciate different mediums for achieving the learning process. Because of the variety of students we have, teachers here are knowledgeable in differentiating lessons. I am leaning towards having my Bronx students of color feel they could compete in a rigorous academic atmosphere.

My Project

My students are learning about rhetoric and the rhetorical situation. Because this is a college-level class, they will be highlighting and using post-its, and they will be annotating on the pages. I would like students to be able to keep the Best American Essays 2019 book to read as actively as I would guide them. By reading actively with their pens and post-its, they will enhance their skills on interacting with a text, because they will be in conversation with the ideas presented. The annotating and active reading skills they will acquire from my class will help them with reading assignments in other classes, with setting a foundation on reading beyond the words on paper, and will also expand their ability to comprehend texts analytically. Reading the essays actively from the perspective of rhetoric will also help them further understand the writing process with collegiate acadamia in mind.

Having a physical book in their hands will remind them to use their minds--and not a search engine search--to understand and analyze.

The anthologies will give them much-needed screen time breaks.
