Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Imagine the harm that can be done to a person's psyche, because of how he or she thinks of his or her neighborhood. I teach Humanities at Adlai E. Stevenson High School to a class of 20 students. We are currently studying the history of the Bronx, learning about what the Bronx was before the burned down buildings and the Cross Bronx Expressway and about the reasons behind the struggles that are distinctly associated with the Bronx. We are studying many different areas in the Bronx and are comparing the old Bronx to what my students know of the Bronx today. I would like to turn our school library into a space for the Bronx Historical Exhibit, showing what certain areas of the Bronx used to look like, and showing what the same areas look like now. To make the exhibit happen, we will need six disposable cameras, so that my students can travel to various neighborhoods in the Bronx to take pictures. We will need to have the film developed, so that the pictures can be displayed. We will also need to make copies of the old black and white pictures of the Bronx, so that we can have them for the before-and-after displays in the exhibit. We will need several posterboards to display the pictures and materials to decorate the posterboards. Since I would also like to have an exhibit opening, we will need beverages and cookies for invited guests, who will be students from other classes, members of the community, Stevenson faculty members, and parents of the students who took the pictures. I want to do this project so that my students can value their neighborhood, and see it for much more than the stereotypes of drugs, violence and prostitution. Having pride in their neighborhood will hopefully lead them to having pride in themselves, which will encourage them to be more than what society expects from them because they are from the Bronx. My students have admitted to not seeing much that is positive in the Bronx because it continues to be depressing. My goals are to give my Bronx students the opportunity to see the beauty in their home, to encourage them to have pride in themselves and in being from the Bronx, to expose them to aspects of the Bronx that nullifies any negative assumption that stem from ignorance, and to have them change how they see themselves and how they see their home.
