This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Bronx River HS Pickleball Club has been thriving as an after school student community throughout the 2023 school year! Students have been falling in love with a game that could be a healthy lifelong hobby.

Beginning in September 2024, NYC schools will be offering pickleball as an interscholastic sport.

Some of my students have been getting more competitive and serious about their play and are eager to turn this game from a casual way to unwind, into a competitive pursuit as student athletes. To help them get more serious about their play, I would like to help them get new equipment that will help them feel like members of a team that they can take pride in.

Students tell me that pickleball club is their favorite part of the week. Instead of going home to sit in their apartments alone, they are thrilled to have an outlet to do something physical while socializing (the same idea that got me hooked on the game as well), developing hand-eye coordination and learning new skills/strategies. Some add that they often consider skipping school, but attend in part because they look forward to pickleball at the end of the day.

I've loved offering my students a safe and healthy after school activity and hope you will help us in their journey toward pickleball greatness!
