My Students

At the Henderson, every student is pushed to reach their greatest potential. As an inclusion school, some students are working on core content, others are working on more advanced work, and still others require major modifications. We have to be creative and resourceful with the materials we have.

The Henderson is the first K-12 Inclusive school in Boston.

One third of our population has special learning needs. Our approach to teaching is that being "different" is what is "normal." We know there will always be a range learning styles and needs, so our job as teachers is to create opportunities for everyone to succeed. Planning with Universal Design for Learning (UDL), we utilize multiple means of presenting information. In any given day, we may be dancing, drawing, using magnetic letters, acting out stories, using educational apps, singing, painting... Any way we can bring the content to life, we'll do it. We want every student to feel engaged, successful and apart of a strong community.

My Project

As technology continues to develop, there are more are more useful applications in a UDL classroom. Currently, the 3 desktops we have do not work, so we have only a few tablets available for student use. These iPads would double the number of students that can be working. There are many web-based educational programs that we use as a school. We use Lexia for phonics development, Google Classroom to communicate with families and share educational resources, and a wide variety of educational videos, speech-to-text programs, audio books, keyboarding programs... the list goes on and on. Technology allows us to better meet the needs of a diverse classroom, and the more access we have, the better.

This project would help our classroom be a more inclusive place.

More technology allows us to meet the needs of many more students, and to constantly provide the best services possible. Thank you for reading!
