Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Some are economically disadvantaged, some are faced with challenges at home, some experience issues with behavior, and some are constantly playing catch-up due to a learning disability.

The one thing that all of my students share is a love for learning, and a self-motivated drive to succeed.

We are a small campus in the big city of Fort Worth and focus our attention on Applied Learning. In order to attend, the students must be accepted through an application process, and are aware that the requirements for staying at this school are reading at least 25 books per year, completing at least 25 hours of community service per year, completing an independent research study project on a topic of their choosing, and completing applied learning projects with their peers. Despite all of these stringent expectations, these students rise to the occasion and strive to do their very best because they value the learning they receive.

My Project

I have done a lot of work in the past with Literature Circles, and have seen the benefits that my students have gained through reading, making connections, and having in-depth discussions together. The issue at hand is that in order to successfully read and comprehend a book, it first has to be on the particular student's reading level, and secondly have a topic that interests the student.

Student choice is the vital link to mastery of subject material that is often missing in the average public school classroom, mainly due to lack of resources.

Students will invest in their learning so much more if they are able to self-select the book they want to read. Having class sets of novels with varied settings, time periods, cultures, and walks of life, will enable our students to have meaningful book talks and make connections they may not have ever made with a book that was chosen for them.

I plan to use a new system of doing Literature Circles through blogging, to meaningfully connect students to each other and the books they have chosen to read using technology. Having different books to choose from will inspire my kids to dig deeper into their novels and drive authentic discussions.
