This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in an urban area of Northern, California.

90% of our students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.

The majority of my students are English language learners. Our school is committed to providing all students access to the curriculum.

Because most of my students are second language learners, they would benefit from direct vocabulary instruction. They are First graders who are at an intermediate level of English Language Development. They attend school in the Mission neighborhood and many come from immigrant families. Their parents truly want them to learn English and make the most of their educational opportunities.

My Project

My learners need explicit instruction to make their reading lives richer. They are on the verge of becoming fluent readers and need to understand what the words mean. Context clues are not enough to make them ready to understand all the Tier 2 vocabulary that they may encounter in their reading.

My English Language Learners, will benefit from the systematic instruction in the Wordly Wise program.

I want them to be able to accelerate their reading ability and catch up to their English dominant peers. The program can be used with our language arts program and can be flexibly implemented throughout the week. Lessons can be from 15-30 minutes long depending on the amount of days you make in your schedule.
