Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are bright, kind and giving. They are just beginning to discover themselves and learn more about who they are and what they like to do.

However, they lack the outlets that allow them to express themselves, get active and engage in sports that help support their physical health.

My middle school students are very curious about the world around them, they are interested in learning new things and partake in new activities, but a lot of them lack the resources required to explore beyond the South Bronx. My student population is made up of 40% African American students, and 60% LatinX students, specifically from Dominican Republic.

My Project

These materials will allow my students to connect with their peers through a team sport. Volleyball will allow my students to explore, learn, compete and collaborate with each other to gain new skills and stay active.

For 63% of my students volleyball is a common sport in their household, they often play it over the weekend and bond over it with their families, however it is not a sport that is offered at our school which hinders the creation of friendship bonds.

Volleyball teaches students responsibility, leadership, teamwork, and hard work. It helps them gain new skills and strengths that can lead to better psychical health, mental health, and higher self-esteem.
