Bringing Virtual Experiences to My Classroom

My students need Oculus Virtual Reality Headsets so that they can experience and understand that the world is so much bigger than their small rural town.

My Students

When you come into my classroom, you will see third grade children who are willing and eager to learn, even though the challenges and responsibilities they face outside of school are more than they should have. My school has a 76% free and reduced school lunch price and even though they have challenges every day they come to school hoping to better their lives.

They come to my classroom looking for a chance to be the wide-eyed, curious students they should be.

My students want to be in charge of their learning. They want choices and they want to be challenged. As a past student from this school I made it my goal in life to give these students from my home town the opportunities they may never get outside of the classroom. They motivate me every day to show them how life can be amazing. They show me every day that if you work hard, we can achieve anything. My students will be able to achieve anything.

My Project

We want to explore virtual reality with out students because research shows that the average person only remembers 20% of what they hear and 30% of what they see, but up to 90% of what they personally experience. As a result, lessons that incorporate virtual resources provide a richer and deeper experience that will have more of an impact on the learning experience of students.

Our goal is for our students to be able to travel to and explore places all over the world without leaving the classroom.

Our students will get the chance to explore South Carolina without ever stepping foot out of the classroom. No need for the extra paperwork or gas for transportation. Our students can use technology to help them experience the world they may never have the opportunity to see.

Our school has been collecting and creating 360 photos and videos that align and support our 3rd grade social studies standards for South Carolina History. My students will now be able to explore different regions of South Carolina. From the Atlantic shores of the Coastal Region to the peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains, students will be able to experience the varying landforms in South Carolina. Students will also be able to explore our cities, national parks, battlefields, and museums to gain a deeper appreciation of South Carolina’s rich history and contributions to our nation’s story.
