My Students

I've always believed that getting students to appreciate the environment involves exposing them to nature. Many of my students live in apartments and have little or no exposure to animals. Allowing them to interact with many species raises their appreciation of nature.

My students are urban students from low income families.

Most are on free or reduced lunches. They live in apartment complexes with minimal exposure to nature outside of my courtyards. Many come into my class with a skeptical view of environmental science. "It's someone else's job to take care of our planet." or "There's nothing that we can do." Once they learn about their personal impact, they want to do more.

My Project

I teach Environmental Science to a low income urban high school. Many of my students have limited exposure to nature. My students love taking care of the classroom animals. Some of them are pets, some are experiments that will ultimately be part of our courtyard experience. Having students care for animals gives them a lesson in responsibility, a respect for nature and an appreciation for the environment. My students need supplies to feed their class pets and projects.

My students LOVE the classroom animals, many of which eventually populate our courtyards.

I have several students who are not in my class stop by during passing period or after school to visit them. Raising a pet is a great way to teach youth about responsibility, but many of my students cannot afford the expense (or their apartment complex does not allow them.)
