I teach 5th grade language arts at a school where 80 percent of the students receive free or reduced lunch. As you can imagine, the resources my students have access to are very limited. This year I find myself faced with a very interesting and unusual situation. There are 6 boys in my class who read on an unusually high level. They also all love to read. The problem is that since they read at a higher level in an elementary school, we are limited on books that are appropriate for them. These boys would really like to read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkein. Unfortunately, in the entire school we only have 2 copies of each book. What I am planning, is to read these novels with the boys so I can help them through the more challenging parts. Although these are strong readers, I feel that they need to be able to read these very challenging books with support. I am asking for 7 copies of the novels - one for each of the boys (which I plan to let them keep) and one for me to read along with them. Often times, students who read at higher levels are left to read on their own while we as teachers work with the lower level students. I feel that this does not give the better readers a chance to grow. I really want these boys to continue their love for reading and continue to grow. If I can have these novels, it will be enough to allow me to read along with the boys for a large portion of the year. Please help me nurture these boys who already have a love for reading!
