Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My AP English Literature students are incredible, passionate young people who are dedicated to changing the world. They live in traditionally low-income neighborhoods that are often surrounded by violence, yet our students strive every single day to make decisions to better both themselves and their community. Many will be the first in their families to go to college. They have seen great growth in their reading and academic abilities in our school and remain devoted to furthering their education.

My AP English Literature students have taken on the enormous challenge of studying college-level literature, despite the fact that the texts we read are often above their reading levels.

They revel in the challenge and are eager to apply what they have learned to stories beyond the classroom.

My Project

All students deserve to experience the magic of theatre. For my students, though, we are limited because we do not have a theatre program on our campus. In my AP English Literature class, I strive to help students see that what we learned about analyzing stories can be applied to a wide variety of art, including the performing arts. I want them to see that the hero's journey is all around them. I want them to see that the songs on the radio are poems, too. As a result, we have always analyzed texts from plays and musicals in class, but I feel I can do more for them.

I believe that the opportunity to see a play—particularly a play with such depth and important thematic elements as WICKED—would be a monumental experience for my students and would help them see themselves as students of the world.
