Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach tenth grade English students in Maryland. I had the pleasure of teaching the majority of them in the 2015-2016 school year for 9th grade and now I have the opportunity to move up with them for their 10th grade year. A number of my students are title one, economically challenged, and have many odds stacked against them. What I saw last year is that they are willing to work against those barriers and fight to be successful. One of my students wrote a beautiful poem in which she explains the difficulties of growing up in Baltimore.

"No I can’t explain how hard it is.

You get use to it growing up a Baltimore kid... “One officer of the Brown case has been called innocent” the reporter says and its back to us, seeing what our reaction is, since the riots we’re seen as dangerous. “Sadly another child has died by committing suicide. Her peers were bullying her” which makes me wonder are the police going to kill us or are we going to kill each other."

My Project

My students need a place where they can write their essays and print their work. Beyond that, the newspaper club at school was very successful the past two years but without the ability to print or type, we had to be creative. Their poems and written work are phenomenal and this will allow them to continue to express themselves. We are going to have a station where students can come after school to type and print. The computers will be set up with the printer and my newspaper kids can come when they have free time to write their articles. They will get to hold meetings in our Writing Room. Without having basic supplies like highlighters and pens the reporters were not able to be successful last year. I will use these materials to create a Writing Haven for them.

In Baltimore, 36% of the adults have some deficit in regards to their literacy skills.

It takes a village and this project will allow me to bring the written word alive! Without technology and the ability to print my students are not receiving an equitable education.
