Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Everyday, I come to work greeted by young men and women excited to see their teachers and peers, but struggling to learn. For many of my students, school is the only place they can go to eat a balanced meal, or interact with adults who can support their needs as thinkers and learners. I teach Middle School Social Studies for Grades 6, 7 and 8. My kids range from gifted and talented, to students who may have never been in a classroom.

My kids come from a "United Nations" of countries, and are eager to learn about the cultures and history of their peers and friends, but lack the resources that can help them communicate with one another as English Language Learners and Students with Disabilities.

Balancing the needs of all of these kids can be frustrating without access to a variety of resources and tools that can aid in their ability to showcase their best.

My Project

Our classroom is lucky to have a set of iPads that students use daily to research topics of study, like Geography, Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Early Humans, and receive materials that we will be using to cut down on our use of paper, and carbon footprints. As a result of prolonged use, the protective covers on our class set, have been severely damaged, and need to be replaced so we can keep our technology safe and in working order. Our students with disabilities rely on the iPads to help them create and finish work, as do our English Language Learners, who benefit from being able to translate work directly from their native language to English, and vice versa, as well as access to dictionaries, visuals and other tools that make learning accessible.

Our students are visual learners!

We help our students learn by creating visual tools like word walls, picture dictionaries, processing and procedure charts. In order to produce these resources, our classroom needs a working color printer. Our current printer is on its last legs, as it has been in service for 13-years. Receiving a new printer would help us continue to create beautiful visual tools and resources to help each of our kids learn.

Please help us continue to create a classroom environment that supports learning for every student!
