The students who attend our school are students from diverse backgrounds. Many attend our school from outside of our immediate area specifically because of the location in a small mountain community. They come because we are a Certified Wildlife Habitat as designated by the National Wildlife Federation and we utilize our outdoor areas to enhance education. The students enjoy hiking and playing outdoors and the kindergarten students play outdoors for over an hour each day. Much of the play on the kindergarten playground is imaginative, creative dramatic play.
The Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students come from a variety of cultures and speak different languages including English, Spanish, French, Japanese, German and Hebrew.
The best thing is that they all play together and become friends during their first year at our school. Watching these young students work and play together is a glimpse into a bright and positive future.
The Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten range in ages from 4 to 6 years old. They are active, curious and creative children who enjoy active play and especially enjoy creating their own games including characters and stories. The children learn to work and play together creating life-long friendships.
My Project
In order to create an inviting outdoor dramatic play area, my project is the 6ft. x 9ft. Sunflower Playhouse. This redwood playhouse is large enough to accommodate a group of children and includes a front porch perfect for sitting and dreaming about the many scenarios often included in the creative play stories of young children.
Our current small plastic toddler playhouse, which was donated by a parent, is too small for our children.
They crowd in and it is not safe for fun creative play. This playhouse will provide a well constructed space that will last for years to come.
