Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach twelfth grade English and Orientation to College at a continuation high school on the U.S./Mexico Border. Our school serves a population designated as highly at risk for becoming high school drop outs. Our students have been sent to us by their home schools because they are deficient in skills and credits needed to graduate. Our school serves a high-poverty, ethnically diverse population of students dealing with all the problems of a typical urban high school: drugs, gangs, pregnancy, homelessness, and low academic skills. Despite these obstacles, our graduation and college enrollment rates grow each year.

Poverty is more than not having access to money, it is also not having access to the kinds of life experiences that build a broad knowledge base. Before I can teach any skill in my class, I have to "frontload" my students with knowledge about a wide range of topics. A tool that is very helpful is showing video clips on my classroom projector. I can show actual Ivy League lectures from You Tube to my students so they can see great teachers explaining concepts to them. This is essential to preparing them for college. We can tour museums and see college campuses, all through video, making plans for our own college matriculation. Unfortunately my school district blocks streaming video on our Internet connection and so I have no way to show short internet video to my class at this time. I have a great projector, but no method to show the information I want to share on it.

I need a digital device capable of downloading video clips and rebroadcasting them over the classroom Proxima projector. After asking technology experts, there are two solutions, either a laptop computer or an Ipod touch. The Ipod touch is significantly cheaper and easier to save to, and also small enough to keep safely locked up in the classroom. With it, I can download material at home and then show it to the class the next day. The speakers will make sure the entire class can easily hear the sound. With an iPod we can go places inside our own classroom that we could never afford to go otherwise.

The California budget crisis keeps getting deeper and deeper. Our school has been cut in numerous ways, and we know that next year there will be even more cuts. I feel like a burden sometimes even asking for paper and pencils from my administrators, so to ask for something as indulgent as an ipod is out of the question. We are all struggling to do more and more with less. When you fund a project for us, you give us not only resources to improve the lives of low income students, and help them to be ready for college, but you also remind us that we are not alone, and that people care about the success of our students. This is a gift beyond any dollar value.
