Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come many of the hardest hit COVID neighborhoods and while dealing with the realities of that for themselves and their families, we worked together to ensure their education did not stop just because we were no longer physically at school. If anything, the circumstances allowed for more freedom for them, and me as their teacher, to work out the ways they learn best.

Students have limitations with resources they can use to engage in school work and the time to do them in.

It is my job to streamline the lessons and deliver them in ways that optimize the resources and time they do have.

Whether working in the classroom or at home, after seeing what worked and did not work for remote learning, I want to ensure I have resources at hand to make sure my students do not fall behind no matter the circumstances the pandemic has put them in.

My Project

My students have been hit hard during this pandemic. Some have lost family members. Many have to contend with the idea that they lose their homes when the eviction moratorium ends. Many have to deal with the fear that comes from knowing their parents must go to work in essential jobs, not knowing if they're going to eventually get sick. The last two months has seen the addition of seeing the nation having a reckoning with the systemic racism and open "debates" people want to have about their humanity. Without exception, none of this altered their determination to attend to their education and it is my wish to make next year run as smoothly as possible for them with simple tools to more easily meet their diversity of learning needs.

As it turns out, the white board is one of the most important spaces in a classroom, and when learning turned remote, we were all missing it.

It's an easy place to capture notes, summarize details, create conceptual visuals, and model clear expectations on skills work.

We're a US History classroom, but we're invested in developing literacy skills that benefit greatly from work done visually on a whiteboard. Part of synchronous lessons necessitates the ability to jot things down so students have visual representations of their ideas. With this white board and markers I can better facilitate my US History classroom from home.
