Help Ms. H.

My 7th grade Social Studies students love creative writing! They are bright, motivated kids, and I would love to give them the chance to see their work in print.

My students love creative writing, but it is often difficult to get them to take pride in their work. They have big, beautiful ideas, but have never gotten the chance to see those ideas presented beautifully. Many don't own computers, so their best efforts are turned in on loose leaf paper, with cross outs and scribbles in the margins.

I'd like to integrate a class creative writing project into our Civil War curriculum. We would read "Behind Rebel Lines" as a class, while peppering the curriculum with excerpts from Free at Last, which includes many letters written by former slaves who fought in the Union army. My students will each write a short story from the perspective of one of the slaves whose letter made it to "Free At Last." I will then compile all the stories into a beautiful, class publication. Each copy of the publication will contain the story by each student. The prospect of publication to everyone's families will be a huge motivator for my student. Each student will get a copy of the publication with his/her own custom cover design. The school copy will contain a printout of a scanned copy of each of the cover designs.

Your help will give my inner city kids the same resources and opportunities that students and teachers in other areas take for granted. By showing these students that we value their education, we tell them that they should value it as well.
