Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in a very diverse neighborhood in Ridgewood, Queens. We are a public school servicing over 900 students from several different countries. 14% of our students are English Language Learners and about 16% of our student population receives special education services.

Our goal is to create life-long learning experiences and lasting childhood memories for all of our students.

We have students coming to use from Egypt, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Yemen, Albania, Poland and several other countries. For some of our students this is their very first time in a formal school setting. We do our best to make sure we create a safe, fun and challenging learning environment.

My Project

This year our school decided to bring some of the arts back to our building. We designed a new Literature Through Dance program. Students in K-5 are using literature to learn about dance and movement. Our K-2 classes are using picture books to help learn various movements. Focusing on characters and the choice of words an author uses to bring books to life. Our third grade classes are studying dances from countries around the world, paying close attention to the culture and history behind those dances. Using the new information they learn students are working to preform these dances. Our fourth and fifth grade classes are looking into our American culture and studying dances throughout the various decades. They are paying close attention to how the time period and culture influenced the dance and music of that time.

Since this is the first time we are bringing this program to our school, we are in need of literature materials like "Folk Dances from Around the World" and "Dance to the Beat" to support our dance curriculum.

Students will be able to use these materials to help design and perform their own dance routines.
