Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a small public high school in New York City whose student body is made up mostly of newcomers to the United States. My students are multilingual English learners who constantly seek ways to make connections across language, culture, and their daily experiences. They have built a tight-knit community, in effect a haven, with their peers and teachers. As a Special Educator, I work mostly with students who have special academic and functional needs that overlap with their expressly difficult task of language acquisition.

As their literacy skills and English proficiency are limited, it is crucial to build a beautifully varied toolkit to allow every learner to access challenging material - giving opportunities for kinesthetic, visual, and tactile avenues to reinforce language skills.

My Project

The range of supplies for visual arts will allow students to co-develop an arts program at our high school, where we currently lack the budget to hire a full-time art teacher. They will be able to engage in the development of long-term visual arts projects while many, as newcomers to the United States, will have an opportunity to strengthen their communication and English literacy skills.

While creating visual and tactile representations, my students take part in a simultaneous rehearsal and troubleshooting of their literacy skills through self-expression.

They will be able to plan, design, and execute a self-guided art piece - as well as collaborate with a group of peers to create a community-sourced installation. These art supplies will offer my students a new medium with which to understand themselves, communicate with each other, and become creative problem solvers in our larger community.
