Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have been teaching art to sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students at I.S. 192 in the Bronx for 5 years. On average I teach art to approximately 150 students each day which equals over 300 students each week. I am amazed and proud of what my students can accomplish, but would love for them to see more famous artwork for influence, art history, and culture. I have noticed that over the past five years the socioeconomic status of my students has changed, and many of them do not go to museums, learn art history, or have ever even seen the work of the famous masters. Because I myself am on a limited budget, I cannot find the extra money to go out and buy art prints to show in class. When we are learning about art history, we look at copies I make from the internet, or old posters that I have collected throughout the years. I really think that I can broaden my student's' artistic horizons and teach them so much more if I had a laptop computer with internet capabilities, and a projector attached to it. With technology like this I could provide them with countless prints and photographs of all different artists and genres with the click of a mouse. I would also be able to prepare PowerPoint presentations on artists to show them slides and information about the artists. This would be providing them with examples, inspiration, knowledge, and culture in each lesson. Aside from teaching regular education classes, I also teach special education, including physically disabled and emotionally disturbed students. I believe that having technology and more visually interesting lessons will stimulate them more. Their attention spans will be better, and they will have more examples to work from. With my students as a whole, I have noticed over the years that they draw better when they have examples and artwork to influence them and look at for ideas. They become inspired by seeing examples and visuals. They also get excited when I mention the name of a famous artist and they actually have heard of him or her. I want my students to experience art, to know their artists and art facts, to have a better understanding of how powerful art can be. I believe that a computer and a projector showing images on my overhead screen will be so much more exciting for them then seeing a rolled up, faded, old poster of a Picasso or Matisse hanging on the wall. Students will participate with this material available every day. When I teach them my regular lesson plans I can incorporate slides, websites, full scale images, notes, and more to spruce up my lesson. They will have such a better understanding of the subject or artwork that we are learning, and it will inspire them and help them to find the artist within each of them. Most of all, many of my students come from families that are sometimes too busy to help them with their homework, pay for field trips to museums, take them to museums or events. They also get the idea that art is not an important subject, and that it doesn't matter or that if they do art as a profession they will never amount to anything. For some of these children art is all they have. They may score poorly in math and science, or not understand their English or social studies, but a majority of my students understand their art, thrive, do well, and are talented. I want them to know that they should continue to pursue their artwork, and stick to their dreams. I want them to learn, have fun, be inspired and enjoy the arts and all they have to offer. Technology in my art room would benefit them so much, and they would be so grateful.
