My Students

I teach at an inner city middle school where students are striving to become respectful and educated young adults. They are eager to become familiar with the wonderful world of modern technology so that they can go to high school prepared and ready to succeed.

My students live in an inner city area where modern technology is not always easily accessible.

Like most middle school students, they are eager to use technology in any way and as often as possible. Most of my students come from low socioeconomic households where it is a daily struggle to make ends meet. In order for them to have access to technology, they must take public transportation to a local library. I know that sounds simple enough, but most of my students come from broken homes where they have gained the responsibility of parenting younger siblings. This fact makes it a nearly insurmountable task of getting to the public library to conduct research and print out a typed report. It pains me to see my students work so hard in and out of the classroom with so little resources. This lack of resources makes it very difficult for them to master this very necessary skill for future academic success.

My Project

My students are learning how to utilize resources to conduct research and provide evidence of their findings. We just finished a week long biome project that entailed using classroom books and laptops to conduct research. They were amazed by the facts and pictures they discovered! Each student was assigned a biome to research and they did a fantastic job! Unfortunately, even after a week of hard work, the final projects did not look finished as they were handwritten and did not include any maps, diagrams or pictures. While my students have access to laptops, they do not have access to printers at home or at school. The disappointment was evident by the constant request for me to individually print out 80 reports on my home computer so that the projects would look professional and reflect all of their hard work. If I had a classroom printer and ink, I would be able to print out each and every report and properly display them in my classroom and school hallway.

My students are learning how to conduct research and create reports.

Much time and energy goes into these projects and their final result should be indicative of that. They have access to laptops;however, they do not have access to any printers. Their final projects are handwritten on loose leaf paper which do not give their projects the appearance of professionalism. Access to a printer will allow my students to effectively communicate their findings.
