My Students

"If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow" John Dewey. Technology plays a vital role in educating today's students. Please help my students bring their stories to life.

Our school is located in an urban area in Southern California.

We are a Title 1 (Socio-Economically Disadvantaged) school. My students are energetic, eager and motivated to learn. They enjoy talking and sharing their personal stories when they have an audience. However, when it comes to writing they are less enthusiastic and put very little effort into it. I use a SmartBoard in my class and I have noticed that my students are more interested and focused when lessons are interactive and presented through the SmartBoard. I think nothing would motivate my students more than watching their stories come to life on the big screen.

My Project

We will examine the elements of a personal narrative, and students will write their own narratives. After finishing their stories they will use clay to create the characters and draw and color a background to create the setting. Then they will work in small groups. Each student will tell his/her story as he/she moves the characters. Another student will capture the movements by taking pictures with the digital camera. After the stories are told and the pictures are taken, students transfer the pictures to the computer and write captions for each picture. We will turn these pictures into a movie. In the end students are able to present their story to the class on the SmartBoard. This project not only motivates students in writing but also helps them acquire knowledge about how to use a camera, how to transfer pictures, how to save them on the flash drives, and make them into a movie. Through retelling and writing the captions students are able to make revisions to their original writings.

Students need to be motivated to put effort into writing.

Art and technology are the two key ingredients. "Bringing Stories to Life" project will change students' attitude toward writing and advances their knowledge about technology. Thank you for your support!
