Bringing Spanish I into the 21st Century

My students need a LCD projector in order to help bring the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries alive in our classroom, and to interact with international pen-pals.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Prior to studying Afro-Latino cultures, my students, mostly African-American, had no idea that there are Latinos who look like them. While watching a video of Cubans salsa dancing, a student exclaimed, “They don't look Spanish!” This interactive visual opened their minds much more than an overhead.

Most of my students are excited to learn Spanish, and have never studied a foreign language before.

My students come from neighborhoods all across Baltimore City, and many have not traveled much outside of their neighborhood. Seventy percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches, and when I surveyed students last year a majority did not have a computer in their home. I teach all 9th graders, and even those without computers at home usually have a cell phone. They also seek out computers, in the library, at their friends' houses; just like teens everywhere they want to be connected. Our school is also one of the ESOL hubs in the city, and there are students from all over the world including a significant number of students from Spanish-speaking countries. That makes me feel like I have an even greater duty to do my job well, so my students can better understand and appreciate the great diversity of those surrounding them.

My Project

I want to show students that speaking Spanish, and learning about different cultures can literally open up a world of opportunities to them. Most of the materials I have access to, especially for the overhead projector, are dated and not engaging. Students respond very well when I use videos of people speaking in Spanish, and PowerPoint's with pictures of places I have visited in the Spanish-speaking world. My school’s foreign language department has no projectors. Last year I borrowed a projector whenever possible. Still, I used technology much less frequently than I would have if we had regular access to the projector in my room. I was able to piece together 2 functioning student computers in my classroom last year. I am determined to help my students access the technology they deserve as part of a quality public education.

Without an LCD projector I will continue to use the dated materials I have access too, and only occasionally be able to use technology in the classroom.

My students and I would be extremely grateful if you helped to bring my Spanish classroom into the 21st century!
