My Students

My students use American Sign Language as their primary language. Few students have full access to full communication at home, meaning that their time at school is crucial. We have the challenge and responsibility of connecting students and parents who do not necessarily use the same first language. With many families that use another language, such as Spanish, some don't write in the same language.

As we move learning into our homes, visual access to support language and literacy becomes more important than ever.

My students are Title I fourth and fifth graders normally bused into East LA, but currently spread throughout LA county.

My students need visual access and support to continue learning from home with access to American Sign Language. For many, their environment may no longer support daily access to fluent language role models. We can't be with them face to face as much as we wish, but we can provide interactive and visually stunning backgrounds in order to make the most of the time we have.

My Project

In moving from teaching in school to teaching in home, I'm lucky to have a blank wall behind my dining room desk. Unfortunately, that does not offer the bright, supportive canvas my students are use to accessing while learning. I was able to purchase a green screen for my home, but need a stand and clamps in order to set up a background that can display pictures of our math word walls, books, and even pictures from shared experiences to lend to engaging discussions.

This stand will allow me to provide simultaneous access to American Sign Language with images of our content and classroom, no matter where we learn.

First, this will be as we all transition to learning from home, but I look forward to the day when we can share these supplies to support students transforming their videos within the classroom. The posters will allow me to continue to share information during lessons in the familiar format of our whole group discussions that we've loved all year.
