Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been teaching at my school for 8 years in upper West Harlem, NYC. Every year I get to work with a diverse group of students ranging from 9 to 13 years old. They bring to the classroom different cultures, academic levels, a variety of interests, and an eagerness to learn and grow. They come to me with talent in art, music, writing, science, and much more. They have this untapped potential that I like to help bring out.

My students strive to learn even if they lack materials.

They engage in the lessons and work together (while they share textbooks). My students come to school everyday ready to learn despite the obstacles they face at home and in their community.

My Project

During this age of technology, my students are so much more knowledgeable than most adults when it comes to smart phones, tablets, and computers. They are capable of picking up skills and running with it to create great presentations. Using technology in the classroom for writing and social studies classes allows my students to explore different cultures, different time periods, and new concepts that they learn. They will supplement this with the Scholastic magazines which will provide tangible examples and ideas. They are able to research, gather appropriate information, create powerpoint presentations, and write narratives or essays afterwards inspired by what they find.

However, at my school, we have to share 15 to 20 laptops with the whole floor (about 10 other classes).

Materials shared tend to get lost, left in another room, or damaged. Donations to this project allow us to have our own headphones so students can work at their own pace without surrounding interruptions or group work conversations. The flash drives will allow the students to safely save their work without worrying about it getting deleted or misplaced when laptops are being used by others.

Lastly, my students do not have access to the computer lab (used by the middle school). When researching, they are not able to print out articles, images, etc. to take with them. Having a printer in the classroom will allow student to print articles as well as their writing pieces.
