My Students

I tell my students that math is inside everything, but they have trouble seeing that when we can't look at pictures, videos, or other media in class.

I teach math to a wonderful and creative bunch of high school students who are excited and ready to learn but who have a lot working against them.

Most of them come from poor families, and they attend public school in Mississippi which has inadequately prepared them for high school and college level work. I have many students working hard to prepare themselves for college, and a significant number of these kids will be the first in their family to attend a university.

My Project

Imagine a math teacher giving a lecture about similarity, telling you that it means "same size, same shape", and putting the definition up on the board. Now imagine a math teacher first projecting a picture of Dr. Evil and Mini-me from Austin Powers and then pointing out that they are the same shape but different sizes. For some students the first example will do fine, but for many--especially my students who struggle with math--presenting content in more than one way and connecting it to the real world helps them understand on a deeper level. As I emphasize problem solving skills in class, having a projector gives me the ability to present more realistic and complex problems that will better prepare them for college.

With a projector I can present content more interestingly, more clearly, and, by spending less time writing notes on the board, I can spend more time focusing on individual students.

Having a projector will allow students to see all the amazing places that math exists and can be used in the world.
