Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kindergarten is a magical time for children, but for some of our students, it can be very difficult if they don't have the tools to be successful.

Our school is located in the poorest congressional district in the country.

The children in our class are from diverse backgrounds, including many first generation immigrants from Ivory Coast, Ghana, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Central America. Our students want to learn, but are often faced with such adversity that education becomes secondary in their lives.

My Project

Our inclusion class is comprised of 40% special needs students, some of whom have severe delays in fine motor skills. As the children learn to write, many are faced with the troubling fact that their writing skills cannot effectively support their communication of ideas and experiences. By having a color printer in our class, we will be able to allow our struggling students the opportunity to write their ideas using the computer, and print their stories in color, alongside their classmate who are more able to communicate their ideas in print.

This project will give students a sense of pride that they've never experienced before.

As students with special needs become more aware of their disabilities, it is crucial that their work is validated in order to build a sense of accomplishment.
