This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a 3rd/4th Grade Self-Contained Special Education teacher in a public elementary school in the South Bronx, where 97% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch and 30% of our students live in temporary housing. My class consists of 12 amazing students who are compassionate, enthusiastic, and have a great love for learning! My students have disabilities ranging from Learning Disabilities to Autism and Emotional Disturbance.

My Project

Fact:

70% of third grade students in the South Bronx are unable to read at their grade level.

COVID-19 left a great impact on everyone. But especially for Students with Disabilities, the academic and social-emotional impact as been detrimental.

As we returned to in-person learning, we are finding ourselves catching up with the learning loss of the past year. Now that our students are safe and back in the classroom, the hard work has begun!

Many of my students have gaps in their phonics knowledge that can hinder the future literacy success. In order to fully comprehend and read fluently, they need to master the decoding and encoding of words. This project will support my students in gaining foundational reading skills through multi-sensory phonics tools such as, magnetic letters, white boards, and task cards. As Students with Disabilities, my students learn best through a multi-sensory experience which allows them to fully engage in learning.

My students are not a statistic. They are scholars, readers, and life-long learners. Help us bring the gift of literacy to our classroom!
