Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Math at an urban, high-need middle school. My students struggle with math problems that require "a lot" of reading and writing.

Teaching math to urban middle school students poses many challenges. I have students in my class with special needs who have individualized education plans (IEP). Many more of my students come from homes where English is not the first language spoken. Even with these obstacles, many of my students like math and the challenges it presents them. However, many of these students "shut down" when they are given a math problem that has "a lot" of reading and writing to it. I would like my students to develop the skills necessary to work on and solve these types of open-ended, higher order questions. It is these questions that will enhance their understanding and enjoyment of mathematics. With this, these students will be more likely and better prepared to take advanced-level courses in both math and science throughout high school and eventually college.

In order to be successful with more challenging, open-ended math problems, students need to work on these types of problems daily. With this document camera, students will be able to work on open-ended problems either individually or in small groups. Then, they can share their solutions to the entire class. Currently, when students share their solutions, they need to write their work on an over-head transparency or on the chalk board. This takes up valuable class time. With the document camera, there is no extra work or time required to share solutions. This means that more of the class time can be devoted to looking at and discussing the students' work. By doing this, the students' abilities to read and write about math will improve much faster.

Your donation will help my students improve their ability to tackle challenging math problems. By doing this, their ability to think logically and independently will improve. It is these skills that students need to have in order to be successful in advanced classes in math and science.
