My students are a fantastic group of enthusiastic learners. This year will be the third time I have taught some of them due to switching grade levels that I teach. They are like my family!
My class is full of a wonderfully diverse group of kiddos!
We come from several nationalities, neighborhoods, and income levels. We have a large range of learning abilities and styles. We speak so many languages, including English, Spanish, Telugu, Arabic, Mandarin, Nepali, and more. The one thing that we all have in common is a passion for learning. Our school is a Title I school, so funding is always an issue for us. We don't want to think about money though. We worry about that enough outside of school. We just want to learn, play and have fun.
My Project
With these books and movies my students and their families will be able to have fun together and engage in authentic learning experiences. Students will each get to take home two copies of a book to share and read with their families. Once they have finished reading the book, the student will then turn in a brief synopsis of what they have read to redeem their movie and a bag of popcorn. Students can then go home and enjoy the movie with their parents. After the the family has watched the movie, they will work together to create a project of their choice to compare the book to the movie.
The best part is, once they finish one book, they can check out another set and continue this all year long!
Families can choose their books and movies as well as their method for comparison. For example, families can create Prezis, PowerPoint presentations, posters, Glogs, videos, etc. Being able to compare and contrast thoughts, ideas, formats, characters, settings, topics, etc. is an enduring skill that ALL students could benefit from. It runs across all content areas and is applicable in everyday life as well. Not only will students be spending quality time engaging with their families, but they will be growing as learners as well!
