My Students

My students are a diverse group of bright young scholars from all over the NYC area, most of whom are first- and second-generation Americans. We are a competitive Title I school in Brooklyn, NY. Our school uses the International Baccalaureate's diploma program as a way to develop students' abilities across disciplines at a very high level and foster well-rounded individuals. We are an "IB For All" school which means that we fully cover the cost of the IB program - usually only available to private school students or a select group in public schools - so that all our students can achieve college readiness. My students often balance rigorous academics with a lot of responsibilities at home supporting their families all while maintaining a positive attitude and desire to learn.

My Project

In September 2015, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Computer Science For All (CS4All). His goal is by the 2025, every student in NYC will have engaged in a meaningful experience using the principals of computer science at every educational level - elementary, middle, and high school. Currently, we do not have any stand alone computer science courses at our school but we are working with the Brooklyn North CS4All team to implement units incorporating computer science into our Physics and Biology courses.

However, we do not want to stop there and want to eventually offer IB Computer Science to our students.

This course would give our students access to more advance computer science content. This incredibly important content will in turn prepare them for the current competitive job market. I would like to start building a library of resources in order to prepare for that goal. I am looking not only for books to help build my and my students content knowledge but also Arduinos, an open source hardware and software platform that allows students to build digital devices to get hands-on experience programming.

These tools will help us take the first steps to develop a more robust STEM program and get one step closer to reaching that 2025 goal set out my Mayor de Blasio in the CS4All initiative!
