My Project

I’m Yina Mercado, a first-year Computer Science teacher in the Bronx. After 13 years of teaching math, I’m thrilled to now introduce coding to my 7th and 8th graders! At my Title I school, most of my students have had no prior experience with computer science. They are eager to learn but are limited to Chromebooks, which don’t offer the kind of hands-on, interactive experience that makes coding come alive. This is why I am requesting two Micro:bits V2 Club kits for my classroom.

With these Micro:bits my students will be able to create real-world projects, bringing their code to life.

I plan to use these kits to introduce them to block-based programming, where they’ll program the Micro to create things like digital step counters, temperature sensors, or even simple video games. The beauty of Micro:bits is that they are intuitive and immediately responsive, which will allow my students to experiment, troubleshoot, and iterate in real time. They’ll get to see firsthand how coding isn’t just something that happens on a screen, but something that can physically interact with the world.

Beyond learning to code, students will also develop teamwork and critical thinking skills. By working on group projects, like programming a Micro to create an interactive game or solve a practical problem, they’ll collaborate, share ideas, and learn the value of perseverance. This hands-on experience with technology is something most of them have never had, and it will open their eyes to the possibilities of STEM fields in their future careers.

Your support in providing these Micro:bits Club kits will give my students the chance to explore coding in an exciting and meaningful way. Thank you for helping me bring this opportunity to my classroom!
