Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students who attend our school are a mixture of different economic and cultural backgrounds. We are a Title I school with over 75% qualifying for free lunch. We have an Honors Program which is designed to challenge our students to achieve beyond the expectations of their socio-economic backgrounds, of which I taught four classes (three 9th grade Honors and one 12th grade AP Literature) last year and currently teach 11th and 9th graders this year. Our school also has a large population of students whose families are either undocumented or are new to this country through the Lottery Visa program.

As I believe that my students should not be defined by their scores, backgrounds, or finances, please know that these students are eager to learn and are living proof the American Dream is alive and well.

These students work hard and have proven to take pride in ownership of their work.

My Project

Through our school's independent reading initiative, students are discovering the joys of reading each and everyday they enter our classroom. As our students have been transformed from reluctant readers to voracious ones, we are facing a new challenge: a limited supply of books.

By donating to our project, you can help provide a greater variety of high-interest and engaging books to our students so that they can continue with their reading journeys.

As most readers know, once you are 'hooked' by an author or a book series, you will become a lifelong reader. Stephen King's books are a pathway to getting students 'hooked' as is J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. It is our hope to stock our classroom bookshelves with these authors and series to continue cultivating a love of reading.
