My students need a butterfly kit and a butterfly refill kit, to share with another class. We need these so we are able to document and see the amazing transformation from caterpillar to butterfly.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My classroom is located at a Title I school in Southern California where ninety-eight percent of students speak Spanish as their primary language. All of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch and come from low-income households.
Students in my classroom and at my school come to school ready and excited to learn every day.
Many students at my school do not have computers and/or Internet access at home. Even though these students don't all have the same material items in their homes, they have curious minds and loving hearts like other children their age. Most of our students live in apartments within a few blocks of school and walk to and from class with their families. Our school does not even have buses since our students live in the densely populated apartments around our school.
My Project
My students live most of their lives within a two block radius. Their house, their school, the grocery store, the park, it is all within walking distance. They live most of their lives within this small urban area. Much of their science experience has been through reading books.
The butterfly lifecycle kit opens their eyes to science in a fresh new way and many students have one of their first positive experiences with science when it is hands-on.
Having done this kit in the past it is hard to describe what happens as they witness the changes. I have stopped a reading lesson and watched as the students gathered around to see a butterfly emerge from a chrysalis that has for days been motionless. They talk about this unit for the rest of the year and come back in following years sharing what they remembered. I want to do everything I can to provide this experience for another group of students.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
