My Students

My students love, LOVE science. They love the hands-on of science. They also love how accessible Bill Nye makes everything they are doing.

I work in a low socioeconomic area.

My students are, and always have been, inquisitive. Their questions that propel them forward in their learning are like little jewels of knowledge. They embrace new academic challenges with a fearless enthusiasm that is refreshing. Science days are fun days in our classroom. They are highly motivated during our science block whether it be reading, answering questions or conducting experiments. They love it all.

My Project

I will use the Bill Nye DVDs as either a pre-teach or review for the students. One option is to show the students the video before we engage in an activity to help build vocabulary or concept. Since these are DVDs, I can show the video in a small group setting for those students who need the extra help. I can also show the DVDs post activity as a review and reinforcement of what they have learned. They can use the video to take notes from (a 5th Grade Common Core Standard) and/or to improve their notes. There are so many amazing and student-supporting options for these videos!

This project will improve my instruction by allowing my students to access science curriculum in another way other than direction instruction and hands-on experiments.

I will have the ability to meet the needs of the students by using the DVDs as either pre or post teaching activities.
