I am a music teacher in a New York City Public School that serves middle and high school aged students facing many challenges including severe physical disabilities, language impairments, autism, intellectual delays, etc. In order to help students express their needs, feelings and participate in groups our school relies on augmentative communication devices such as "Big Macs" and a system of picture symbols using "Mayor Johnson Symbols." I have begun to program various percussion rhythmic beats, sections of songs, and melodic lines on "Big Macs" and "Step by Steps." When the students strike the device with his hand or head switch, the sound is reproduced and he is able to participate in our band. Even though he may not be able to hold a drumstick for example, he can now "play" a drum. The smile on their faces and the success that they feel is a wonderful thing to see. If I had more of these devices, more students could take part. Thank you for whatever help you can give.
