My Students

Do you know what it feels like to have something that you like taken away? Well my returning students are going to be experiencing that when they come into my classroom this week.

My class is an Early Childhood special education class in a public school in Brooklyn, NY.

The school community is very diverse, and so are the needs of my students. From English Language Learners to students with autism, my class has a variety of learners with different abilities. Though my class is diverse they all are very enthusiastic, and really enjoy coming to school, and I am very lucky to be teaching most of these students for a second year. My students each have different interest. Some of their interests are insects, writing, anything Dr. Seuss, and buses. The one interest that they all have in common is using the classroom computer. This year we are in a new classroom, and have no computer. I believe that technology can be very beneficial in educating students, especially students with special needs. The computer allows me to differentiate my instruction to meet the many needs of my students by using various computer programs and websites.

My Project

I am asking for a laptop for my students to use during center time, and to use as a resource during our units of study. A laptop will enable my students to extend their learning by practicing their literacy and math skills using various programs and Internet websites. The students who will be entering my class for the first time will learn how to operate and use a computer. Often times this is the only opportunity that some students have to use a computer. In a society that is surrounded by technology 24 hours a day, exposing the students to a computer early in their school experience will set the foundation for all that they will continue to learn through out their lives.

As my class was getting ready for their Kindergarten Stepping-Up ceremony, I asked each of my students to tell me three things they liked learning in class K-5.

The one answer they all had in common, even a student who has trouble verbally expressing himself, all said "the computer." Now with the new school year approaching this week, the one thing my students love, we no longer have in our classroom. It would mean the world to my students to have a computer to use in our classroom.
