My Students

Our school serves students in grades TK-8 span. We are a Title One inner city public school in Los Angeles. Most of our students are both culturally and socio-economically disadvantage. 98% of our students qualify for free lunch. Although our school is an impoverished community, we strive to provide rigorous academics with continuous efforts to improve student learning through professional development and early language and literacy development for the primary grades.

According to research, "Involvement in the arts is associated with gains in cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skills .

Due to state-mandated in academic rigor in language arts and math focus, the subject of arts has pushed to the wayside.

This new school year, I have the opportunity to collaborate with another primary grade teacher to plan an integrated art curriculum for our 55 first and second graders who are both energetic and eager to learn.

My Project

I envision to give my first and second graders a hands-on art experience in the classroom. Before we visit Getty Center in January, I'd like to emerge my students with visual arts content standards that are essential to both grade levels.

The model magic clay will enable my students to create 3-dimensional sculptures in both real or fantasy forms.

The multicolored pens and post-it notes will enable my students to write and record notes and thoughts in an interactive art journal. The given opportunity of creating art work will bring a positive long-lasting impact in my students' ability to connect art to real-world. This project will not only bring art to life, but the process will develop my students' critical thinking skills through communication of art while also increase their chance in community collaboration to become productive citizens of the 21 century.
