My Students

My students are in the third and fifth grades, are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and attend a public school for students with disabilities in Brooklyn, NY.

Our students are a diverse group of learners who continuously push themselves to enhance their social and academic skills.

Each student has a vibrant cultural and social background comprised of a family history as well as influences from their family culture, life in the different city neighborhoods they are from, and the many different people they have met and will meet along their learning journey. Our students are born this way. They are born filled with wonder, having the ability to see the world from a different point of view, and an innate love for learning. All they need is an opportunity.

The students are continuously adapting and developing their academic and social skills as they adjust to learning in-person and virtually. They deserve the tools needed to reach their highest educational and social potential.

My Project

Art is an irreplaceable component of a student's educational journey.

Art is both exciting and motivating for students. Due to this, artistic expression is often built into our learning activities, and the works created by our learners are displayed on bulletin boards.

Students are always proud of the pieces they produce, and so teachers are always looking for new ways to give students ownership of both the work they produce and how it is displayed. Having materials to use the Silhouette machine will give students the tools they need to have a say in how their work is produced and presented to peers and classroom visitors.

The Silhouette machine has accompanying design software with an easy to use user interface. Students will be able to drag and drop pictures, words, and symbols, then send their creations to the machine as easily as they would send a document to a printer. With extra materials, students can remain socially distant while they prepare their work for cutting. Having card stock in various colors will allow students to express themselves using their developing communication skills by making choices and showing preference.

With these materials, students will be empowered to change the classroom set-up from a teacher-driven design to one chosen and created by students for students.
