This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

6th grade is a year of exploration. Students are figuring out who they are, how they fit into school and life, exploring what interests them, possible career choices, and they still have an interest in school. It is an age group that is still developing their thinking and learning about how they learn. One way to support this is by using manipulatives in the math classroom.

The algebra tiles in this project will help students build their conceptual understanding about how math works.

Students will not just “see” digits or numbers on a page and memorize what to do with them, but they will represent both positive and negative integers and interact with them in a meaningful way. By moving, grouping, and arranging the tiles, students will build their understanding of why mathematical processes works with digits on a page.

Additionally, the tiles will help students develop their oral language skills. The algebra tiles will be part of our math manipulative bins that are available at all student groups, every math class. Students know that they can access the math tools within these bins whenever they need to represent or explain their thinking. Being that our class, and campus, has a high percentage of English Language Learners, it is important that we integrate oral language practice whenever we can. The algebra tiles will allow students to model their work and then explain what they did to their partners and groups before transferring their work to paper. It will also allow for an opportunity for them to ask their neighbors questions and for them to have healthy discussions in which they agree / disagree with the models that are produced.
