This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am trying to prepare my urban students for a world dominated by technology, and yet I work in a classroom that often lacks any access to a reliable up-to-date computer. I teach English to 6th grade students in a high-need community. Not many students have access to computers and the Internet in their homes. However, students love to use technology whenever possible.
A laptop could bring the work in our classroom into the 21st century. I recently obtained a printer/scanner/copier from another Donors Choose proposal, and if I was able to use this with a laptop, I could scan and store the students' work on the laptop. This way I could create electronic portfolios for the students that they could access throughout middle school.
There are many classroom projects that would become possible with a Macbook Air. I have a class working towards performing scenes from a play, and I could use the computer to create clips of performances. Later in the year, we will be doing a mythology unit. I could use the laptop to show them different presentations and images about myths. This computer is also lightweight enough that I could easily keep it safe by transporting to and from school.
Our educational system has not changed with the times. Your help in providing for a new, light laptop for classroom use will modernize my classroom. I work in a large, powerful city, but I often feel I lack the tools to empower my students for today's economy. Please help them bridge the digital divide by providing access to exciting technology within the classroom.
