Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students I will be working with are first grade students who live in the West Bronx/Tremont area in the Bronx. This neighborhood is an urban neighborhood that is diverse in its demographics. Most of the students are from low income households.

The children are part of the Horizon program, which is tailored to serve children on the autism spectrum.

Our goal is to create an environment for the students in which they feel safe and respected. Establishing routines is a very important part of the Horizon curriculum. Visuals are very important when communicating expectations, teaching new strategies and learning social skills.

My Project

A color printer will help the students have access to materials that they can use throughout the school year. Token boards, personalized checklists, voice level charts, visual schedules and calming area boards are just some of the many visuals we use throughout the year.

Children who are autistic rely on visuals to understand new concepts, expectations, strategies and social skill development.

The color printer will help bring the visuals to life. Providing visuals that are black and white do not have the same impact as visuals with color. The color gives the pictures in the visuals makes the visuals more realistic and makes them easier to understand.
