Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn," Benjamin Franklin said. My young students want to be involved with the stories and songs they learn.

The children I teach attend a high poverty K-8 school in New Jersey.

They are an incredible group of students who inspire me daily with their curiosity, intelligence, and kindness. With the help of their teachers, they have created a loving and nurturing school environment.

My Project

My younger students from Kindergarten through 2nd grade all have a love of combining stories with music. I have collaborated with our art teacher and have made a number of puppets to attach visual significance to stories like "Peter and the Wolf" and "Swan Lake." Soon after I did this, students were making puppets on their own to interpret and even compose songs. I would love to see these students have access to a real puppet theater and perform for and with one another. I would also love to see them get to use a beautiful set of Hispanic puppets to act out the creative stories they come up with for one another.

If my students have access to this gorgeous theater and charming puppets, they will be learning more than stories and songs.

They will be learning how to work together as an ensemble and express themselves through a character. They will learn about the cultures of many countries and will gain confidence in being able to share what they have learned with their classmates. Donations to this project will make a true difference and bring so much joy and knowledge to great group of children.
