Help Mrs. Newman

Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal. I am a third grade teacher at a public school. My school is a title one school and my students are predominately lower middle class. Our K-5 school has approximately 2,000 students and we share resources between almost 100 classroom teachers.

My students' attention spans are quite short. They have grown up watching TV and playing video games, thus textbooks, pencils and paper do not excite them very much. Many of my students also lack experiences that help them to identify with the subject matter I am teaching. They have very little prior knowledge about social studies topics, other cultures, habitats and communities outside of our state. Without a prior knowledge or an exciting presentation, it is difficult to engage them in the subject matter, and even harder to help them understand and apply the concepts I am trying to teach them. Furthermore, we only have one computer in the room, so it is impossible for my entire class to use this technology in an effective manner.

I would love to have a multimedia projector in my classroom to help diminish these problems. A projector hooks up to the computer and allows my entire class to view a program, video, photograph, demonstration or web page on a large screen. The projector would allow me to integrate technology and expand my students' understanding in every subject area. For instance, in math, I could use the projector to show my class the wonderful models, examples and games available on the web. For science, I could use the projector to show them videos, pictures and demonstrations of animals, habitats, geological formations, magnetic attraction and much more. The projector will open my students' eyes to the world around them and help them connect visually to topics that they may have no prior experience with.

You can help me show my third graders the Grand Canyon, an interactive map of Greece, and Louvre in Paris and many other sights they would not otherwise ever get to see. You can help them put a picture or video with an otherwise unfamiliar concept or vocabulary word. Please bring the world to my classroom by donating towards an LCD projector for my classroom.
