Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a 5th grade special education teacher in a Title I school in New York City. My class consists of 12 amazing students! All my students have talents and strengths; sometimes; all it takes is exposure or motivation. My students strive for excellence in all they do!

My Project

I am sure my wonderful students are nervous about all the changes that will occur in September when school starts again. I want them to feel worry-free! The first step is making the classroom as safe as possible with hand sanitizer, soap, and wipes to make sure the classroom is always clean and taking all necessary precautions.

Also, I don't want them to have to worry about buying supplies.

I want them to have folders and notebooks to keep their work organized and easily accessible. We are going to put the supplies to use right away with the work we complete when reading Seedfolks. My students want to read Seedfolks at home and school independently which means they all need their own novel. The story is told by a diverse cast of characters living on Gibb Street in Cleveland, Ohio, each from a different ethnic group. Each person comes together to form a community. I am using this novel for culturally responsive teaching that will make meaningful connections between what students learn in school and their cultures, languages and life experiences. These connections help students access rigorous curriculum, develop higher-level academic skills, and see the relevance between what they learn at school and their lives.

I want my students to remember that our classroom is our home away from home. I want them to feel safe and excited to start the year with supplies in their desk already. Also, by starting off with our class reading Seedfolks! I know they will love the connection they will form with the book while learning at the same time.
