My Students

Welcome to my classroom! I teach high school Biology at a diverse high school in Maryland. I try my best to present students with engaging lessons that broaden their scope of the living world around them.

I have the privilege of working with a diverse group of students every day.

I work with students in inclusion Biology classes up through students taking AP and IB Biology. In both classes, I have the opportunity to work with enthusiastic learners for whom learning comes easily, those that have learning disabilities, and those who are working hard to improve their English skills. The enthusiasm of my students is what motivates me to work so hard to develop interesting lessons that are differentiated for their varying needs.

My Project

Each year, one of the most interesting units we cover in Biology is the nervous system. Students love learning how things from sense to reflexes work and have so much fun testing these out in the classroom.

One of the more difficult concepts in this unit is understanding the biochemical processes that occur to send signals between neurons (nerve cells) in our bodies.

I have tried numerous methods to help students understand this concept and have found that manipulatives are most effective.

I would like to upgrade my paper cut-outs, which show wear and tear after one use, to a better quality, colorful set. These foam pieces will really help to reinforce not only cellular structure, but also all of the complexities involved in synaptic transmission. Not to mention, they will be fun to use!
